Famous sculptor Zurab Tsereteli died in Moscow at the age of 92. This was announced today, April 22, by the artist's assistant Sergey Shagulashvili.
"Zurab Konstantinovich died at one-thirty in the morning. Now we are deciding when the farewell will take place, " the agency interlocutor said.
According to him, the cause of the artist's death is cardiac arrest. The decision on the farewell and funeral will be made later.
Tsereteli is a Soviet, Georgian and Russian muralist, sculptor, painter, teacher. Since 1997 — President of the Russian Academy of Arts. People's Artist of the USSR, People's Artist of the Russian Federation, full holder of the Order of Merit for the Fatherland.
He was born on January 4, 1934 in Tbilisi. He is the founder of the Moscow Museum of Modern Arts (1995), the RAH Gallery of Art Zurab Tsereteli (2000) and the Museum of Modern Art in Tbilisi (Georgia, 2012).
He is the author of more than 5000 works of painting, graphics, sculpture, monumental and decorative art (frescoes, mosaics, panels). As a sculptor, he created many monuments, among them "Friendship Forever" in Moscow, "Good conquers Evil" in front of the UN building in New York, "The Birth of a new Man" in Seville, "To destroy the wall of distrust" in London, the Monument to Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya in Ruza and others.
