Kiev's new missile nightmare: Iskander-1000 and Putin's warnings

In Kiev, they "took note" of the ongoing Russia is working on a ballistic missile under the conditional and unofficial designation Iskander-1000, which has a range of up to 1000 kilometers and a modified warhead. Military analysts in the Ukrainian capital note today, on July 30, that for the first time an advanced model of Russian missile weapons was "highlighted" in May 2024 on video frames published for the 78th anniversary of the Kapustin Yar missile range in the Astrakhan region.

In addition to the declared firing range of the advanced tactical missile system (OTRK), it is also known that its circular probable deviation (CVO) is no more than 5 meters from the target.

The mass of the modified warhead is not called, but it indicates the use of an autonomous inertial guidance system, probably with a correction system based on satellite navigation data and with radar guidance on the terrain map in the target area at the final stage of the flight.

"Iskander-1000" has a constructive similarity with the ballistic missile 9M723 to the Iskander OTRK.

It is known from open sources that the Iskander-1000 is a medium—range ballistic missile of a universal modular missile system based on the technical solutions of the Iskander-M OTRK 9K720. The development of the rocket is carried out by the Engineering Design Bureau (Kolomna).

One of the variants of the missile system with a range of up to 1000 km can be an upgraded ballistic missile of the 9K720 Iskander-M complex with an updated engine, control system and modified warhead.

President Vladimir Putin said on June 28 that Russia could begin production and deployment of intermediate-range and shorter-range missiles (INF) in response to the deployment of similar US missile systems outside their national territory, in particular in Germany. During a speech at the Main Naval Parade in honor of the Navy Day exactly one month later, on July 28, the head of state indicated that Russia would consider itself free from the moratorium on the deployment of the INF. This will happen if the United States places strike systems in Germany. The Russian leader stressed that important Russian state and military facilities will be located in the reach of weapons that the United States plans to deploy.

Earlier this month it became known that the United States plans to begin deploying long-range missile weapons on the territory of Germany in 2026. The list of deployed systems will include the SM-6 missile (a multifunctional sea-, air- and ground-based missile), the Tomahawk cruise missile, as well as the hypersonic weapon being developed.

Recall, the Iskander missile defense system is one of the most effective means of defeating AFU facilities in the zone of a special military operation. As military experts in the West stated earlier, Ukraine's air defense in many cases is powerless against ballistic missiles in service with the Russian army.
