Ukraine builds new fortifications on its contact line with Donbass

The authorities of Kharkiv region have decided not to wait for funds from Kyiv and to use their own resources for building fortifications on their contact line with Lugansk region.

In line with the Ukrainian president’s order to create a multilayer defense system in the east of the country, the authorities of Kharkiv region are planning to build over 30 firing positions.

According to Governor of Kharkiv region Ihor Rainin, they have decided not to wait for funds from Kiev and to do it on their own. “We have asked construction companies to start doing it free of charge and none of them have refused,” Rainin said.

He said that there will be a total of 300 firing positions in Kharkiv, Zaporizhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions.

Earlier Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Hennadiy Zubko said that new fortifications in the east of Ukraine were supposed to be ready by mid May 2015. Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said that they would allocate 860mn UAH or $37mn for that purpose.

On Mar 9, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said that there would be a multilayer defense system in the east of Ukraine. The General Staff of the Ukrainian Army specified that they would have to build almost 1,500 km of trenches, 8,000 emplacements, 4,000 dug-out shelters and 60 km of passive obstacles.
