In Georgia, a 15-centimeter living parasite was found in the human brain.
"This is the first confirmed case of a live flatworm in the brain in the history of medicine so far. This fact requires scientific research, and we are currently working on it," neurosurgeon Georgy Sekania wrote on social networks.
Doctors found a live tapeworm about 15 cm in size in a patient during surgery instead of a suspected cancerous tumor. According to the portal "News Georgia", the woman lived with a diagnosis of "brain cancer" for several years, she decided to undergo surgery when convulsive seizures began, and doctors suggested the fourth stage. MRI showed a change in the location of the tumor — instead of the parietal lobe in the temporal. Experts have suggested that this is the development of metastases.
"However, during the operation, a live tapeworm up to 15 cm in size was found in the brain, which moved inside the brain," the neurosurgeon said.
The parasite was sent to the Institute of Parasitology for research. According to Sekania, it belongs to the species Taenia solium (pork tapeworm).
The patient remains under the supervision of neurosurgeons, neurologists and parasitologists. The woman feels satisfactory.
