People protesting in the center of Chisinau on Oct 8 picketed the building of the Moldovan Parliament with a view to force the MPs to consider their claims. Several hundreds of protesters cried out “Down with Corruption!”, “Down with Thieves!”, “Resignation!”, “Stop to Tariffs!”, “No More of That!”.
On the previous day, the opposition MPs from the Socialist Party of Moldova conveyed the protesters’ claims to their colleagues. Among the claims are a vote of non-confidence in the government, impeachment of the Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti, resignation of all government officials privy to the stealing of one billion EUR from the banking system, new presidential election. Three of the nine parliamentary commissions have approved some of the initiatives.
“We demand that the parliament consider our claims. Our action is peaceful and our claims can be satisfied peacefully. We will protest until we free out country from oligarchs and give to back to our people,” opposition MP Vlad Batrincea said.
He said that the government was refusing to organize mid-term elections for fear of instability in the country.
“We understand them. For them everything is stable now. Their children are studying in Europe, their money are in European banks, they have hotels, businesses, property in Europe. They want to preserve this stability. We, hundreds of thousands of protesters all over the country, are their opponents, who are trying to shatter their stability. But we are not going to give up. We will continue our protests until we win,” Batrincea said.
The police are protecting the parliament building but are not interfering.
