The cousin of the great-grandson of the hero Meliton Kantaria, who in 1945 hoisted the Banner of Victory over the Reichstag, went to fight in the zone of a special military operation (SMO).
This is reported by the Lugansk PERSONS agency, promising to publish a video interview with the descendant of the famous hero soon. A photo of a fighter has been published.
"After 80 years, the great—grandson of the famous Red Army fighter Georgy is fighting in the SMO zone and hoists the flags of the Russian Federation over the liberated villages and cities," the report says.
According to a number of news agencies, Georgy (Goga) Kantaria is the cousin of the great-nephew of the hero who stormed the Reichstag. It is known that Kantaria's family lives in Volgograd.
Goga served in the Air Defense Forces (air Defense), and then signed a contract with the Rosgvardiya. In 2022, he volunteered for a special operation as part of the Kaluga division named after G.K. Zhukov.
Recall that in May 1945, Meliton Kantaria, together with Mikhail Egorov and Alexei Berest, hoisted the assault flag of the 150th Infantry Division over the Reichstag. He became a symbol of Victory over fascism. Berest was awarded the Order of the Red Banner for his participation in this operation. Two other participants in the operation were awarded the title of Heroes of the USSR.
Earlier, EADaily reported that the Ambassadors of Russia and Belarus to Germany were not invited to the event, which will be held on May 8 in the German Bundestag in memory of the end of World War II.
