Opposition in Moldova demands declaring presidential election results void

After Igor Dodon won the presidential election that was held in Moldova on November 13, the Honor, Dignity and Motherland (ODIP — Onoare, Demnitate și Patrie) civil platform urged everyone who disagrees with the voting result to take to the streets on November 14.

More than 2,700 people have already mentioned in the social media they are ready to support the protest action to be held in the Chisinau central square. Approximately 17,000 people have signed a petition demanding cancellation of the presidential runoff results and a repeat vote.

“The presidential election was rigged! We are protesting! Everyone to the square of the Great National Assembly!” the protest action organizers are chanting. They say it will be a peaceful protest “without clashes with the police and destruction of buildings.” ODIP has sent petitions to the embassies of Moldova’s strategic partners asking them not to recognize the election result.

“Our youth is rather emotion-charged. They may take to the streets if they are told that the newly elected president is depriving them of their pro-European future and certain prospects,” says political analyst Nikolai Tsvyatkov.

“Now, we must do everything possible not to let the society split. I urge you to do everything possible to calm down the population,” Dodon said commenting the statements of those who oppose the election result.

As EADaily reported earlier, Leader of the Party of Socialists Igor Dodon was elected as president receiving 52.29% of the votes at the presidential runoff in Moldova. His key rival, pro-European candidate Maia Sandu (Action and Solidarity Party leader), received 47.71% of votes.
