Russia continues consulting with Saudi Arabia on combating terrorism

Russia and Saudi Arabia advocate more active measures to fight terrorism and extremism.

On Jan 19, Riyadh hosted Russian-Saudi inter-department anti-terror consultations.

The Russian delegation was led by the Russian President’s Special Representative for International Cooperation in Combating Terrorism and Transnational Organized Crime Alexander Zmeyevsky, the Suadi delegation by Deputy Foreign Minister for Multilateral Relations Torki Bin Muhammad Bin Saud Al-Kabir.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry reports that the consultations have become a practical step to implement the Nov 2014 agreement to form an anti-terror working group.

“The sides discussed urgent tasks for combating terrorism in the UN format as well as in regional and bilateral frameworks. Special attention was paid to the need to intensify measures to curb the spreading of terrorist and extremist ideas and misinterpreted religious postulates. The sides pointed out that the combat with terrorism should involve governments, civil societies, religious structures, mass media and research and educational institutions,” the ministry says.

It adds that there was also an exchange of views concerning other criminal challenges and threats, like drugs-trafficking, corruption, cybercrimes.

The next consultations are expected to take place in Moscow.
