U.S. does not protect its allies after use – Socialist Party of Moldova

Vladimir Plahotniuc, First Vice Chairman of the Democratic Party of Moldova (DPM) who was on a working visit to Washington held a series of meetings with Menno Snel, Executive Director at International Monetary Fund (IMF). The government of Moldova is negotiating for a new agreement with IMF at the request of the parliamentary majority.

“To ensure economic and political stability, we need a new agreement with the IMF. We will this way demonstrate how seriously we are engaged in modernization and reforms in the country,” Plahotniuc said.

Plahotniuc and Snel discussed the prospects of cooperation and the process of reforms in the country along with the government’s recent actions.  “Together with the Fund’s representative we discussed the current situation in Moldova and the need for reforms, as well as the willingness of the Chisinau authorities to speed up reforms, especially the ones in the financial and banking sector.  Of course, we again invited the IMF representatives to visit our country as soon as possible,” Vladimir Plahotniuc said.

He said the agenda of the prior reforms was approved in late February. “By July, it is necessary to introduce 82 provisions of the document, and almost 40% of them have been implemented already,” he explained.

Leader of the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM) Igor Dodon believes the U.S. gesture in support of the incumbent government is a mistake towards the population, NOI reports.

“Americans do not protect their allies after using them in their geopolitical games, when they become no longer necessary. The ‘coordinator of the ruling coalition’ who made a deal with Americans may face a similar fate,” Dodon said commenting on the U.S. support to Plahotniuc.

The socialist believes that Plahotniuc’s meetings with high-ranking U.S. officials prove that everything that has happened in Moldova during the recent years was with consent of the U.S. government.

“The United States is ready to sacrifice freedom and democracy of any country to turn the geopolitical situation in its favor,” Dodon said.

The DPM press-office reported that Vladimir Plahotniuc was invited to the U.S. by the Atlantic Council*. The U.S. Embassy in Chisinau confirmed that Plahotniuc is a member of the Moldavian delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister Octavian Calmic.

EADaily reported earlier that Vladimir Plahotniuc had already met with the Atlantic Council* experts. Victoria Nuland, Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs at the United States Department of State, assured Plahotniuc that U.S. will further assist Moldova in its reforms. Nuland praised the positive results made by the ruling coalition during the first months of reforms. The U.S. Department expressed readiness to send a group of experts to Chisinau to help the government of Moldova in further reforms.

The Atlantic Council* is a think tank in the field of international affairs. Founded in 1961, it consults the White House Administration and the U.S. Congress. The Council has a status of an NGO. There are Atlantic Councils in all the NATO countries.
