Special Envoy of the US President for Special Assignments Richard Grenell has repeatedly made unofficial trips to Switzerland to negotiate the resumption of the Nord Stream gas pipeline. This is reported by the German edition of Bild with reference to its own information.
"According to the information available to Bild, the envoy—at-large unofficially traveled to Switzerland several times to discuss the deal," the publication quoted RIA Novosti as saying.
The pipeline operator Nord Stream AG is registered in the Swiss canton of Zug.
According to Bild, as part of the deal, it is assumed that the Americans will act as intermediaries in the supply of Russian gas through the Nord Stream— 2 pipeline, and Nord Stream— 1 is planned to be restored and repurposed for the supply of "green" hydrogen from Finland to Germany.
The US government will not be directly involved in the deal, American investors are planning to participate in it, the newspaper emphasizes.
In turn, the German government circles informed the publication that they did not know anything about Grenell's meetings in Switzerland. Grenell himself does not confirm his participation in the negotiations.
As reported by EADaily, Matthias Warnig, the head of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline operator Nord Stream 2 AG, plans to resume the operation of the gas pipeline with the help of American investors and contact the team of US President Donald Trump for this, the Financial Times wrote, citing sources.
According to her, a consortium led by investors from the United States has already developed a draft plan for a deal with Gazprom, which can be concluded after the lifting of US sanctions.
