Consonant with the sexual organ: the organizers of "Eurovision" demand to rewrite the song of Malta

Singer Miriana Conte, who will represent Malta at the Eurovision 2025 international song contest, was obliged to change the text of her composition due to consonance with swearing. This is reported by The Guardian.

It is clarified that the name of her song Kant by ear corresponds to the English obscene word, which means the female genital organ.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) banned Conte from performing at the competition with the original version of the track. At the same time, the Maltese word kant comes from the Latin cantus — singing.

The organizers believe that the Maltese singer deliberately plays with the meaning of the words, also using the expression serving kant, which is popular in drag culture and means "to show courage."

It is clarified that the EBU made this decision after a complaint from the BBC. Journalist Scott Mills, who reports on Eurovision on BBC radio, said on the air: "We can't talk about the Maltese song at all… We definitely can't play an excerpt from it... ever."

In a statement to the publication, the European Broadcasting Union stressed that all applications from participants must be submitted in the final version by March 10.

"If a song is considered unacceptable for any reason, broadcasters are given the opportunity to change it or choose a new one before the deadline in accordance with the contest rules," the organizers of the contest noted.

The singer herself promised that she would do everything that was required of her and take the stage in Basel.

"Although I am shocked and disappointed, especially because we have less than a week to present the song, I promise you the following: the show will continue — Diva will not fall," she wrote on her social network page.

As reported by EADaily, earlier the Italian consumer protection association Codacons sent a complaint to the European Broadcasting Union demanding that the song of the representative of Estonia Tonni Cash Espresso macchiato be excluded from the Eurovision 2025.

The organization explained that "the text contains stereotypes about Italy and Italians associated with the usual cliches about coffee and spaghetti, but above all with the mafia and ostentatious luxury, and which allows you to convey the idea that these people are doubly associated with organized crime." Codacons also stressed that sexist and offensive songs for women are rightly excluded. However, it does not seem appropriate, "based on the same criteria, to allow a song to participate in Eurovision that offends a country and an entire community, damages the reputation of an entire nation."
