Catastrophic frosts were reported in Turkey

The most catastrophic frosts for the harvest hit Turkey this week for the first time since 2014, Agriculture and Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli said on the social network X.

"From April 10 to April 12, in some areas the temperature dropped to minus 15 degrees, in some regions the lowest temperature (for this season) has been recorded in the last 30 years. Unfortunately, as a result of this weather, we experienced the worst frosts for the harvest for the first time since 2014," he wrote.

According to him, the ministry's staff will support the farmers, they are already assessing the damage.

This week, the temperature dropped sharply in most provinces of the republic, snow fell in some areas.

According to the state agency Anadolu, the harvest in 36 of 81 provinces of Turkey suffered from frosts.

In particular, the greatest damage was caused to apricot trees in the province of Malatya in the east of the country, where the temperature dropped to -7 degrees, said the mayor of the city of the same name, Sami Er. In the provinces of Izmir, Denizli and Manisa, vineyards, apple trees, cherry and apricot trees were severely damaged.

In the province of Kahramanmarash, the temperature dropped to -13 degrees, the planting of apples, quinces, walnuts, almonds, cherries, apricots, pistachios, olives suffered, the local Department of agriculture told the agency.
