Putin, Merkel and Poroshenko discuss situation in southeastern Ukraine

President of Russia Vladimir Putin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko discussed implementation of the set of measures on peaceful settlement of the conflict in the southeast Ukraine during a phone call on February 17.

According to the Kremlin press office, the leaders discussed a cease-fire, withdrawal of heavy weapons, and the situation near the town of Debaltsevo. They also discussed the role of observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. According to Reuters, Merkel, Putin, and Poroshenko stressed the need to ensure OSCE observers’ access to the conflict zone.

They agreed to continue contacts in various formats to help implement the Minsk agreements.
