Signing of a legally binding agreement with Pristina is impossible without a wide consensus in the Serbian society, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic believes. Meanwhile, signing the agreement should be treated as a part of bargaining with the European Union whether it will access Serbia or not, Vucic stressed.
“It is in the interests of Serbia to come to agreement with Albanians no matter if we become EU members or not. But would it be signed, I am sure the door to the EU for us would be not half-open, but wide open,” the Serbian president said in an interview to Vecernje novosti.
According to him, if Serbia increases its GDP even 50 times and becomes a champion in reforms, the EU will bind its accession with settlement of the Kosovo issue. At the same time, Vucic confirmed reports that received a document from representatives of Western countries that contains principles Belgrade should be driven by when discussing the Kosovo settlement. “All I can say is that Serbia could hardly agree with those principles,” Vucic said.
He also admitted that it is hard for Serbia to present new proposals on Kosovo as the West sees the issue as settled after the Kosovo Albanians one-sidedly declared independence.
Vucic said that he would make public his proposals when decides that is is good for Serbia and when a certain result can be achieved at the moment.
