German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called the announcement of the plans of US President-elect Donald Trump to meet with Russian leader Vladimir Putin "not bad news". The head of the German government stated this in an interview with ARD TV channel.
"Of course, the time for real negotiations will come someday. And in this regard, the fact that the American and Russian presidents want to meet is not bad news," Scholz said.
At the same time, the head of the German government stressed the importance of such contacts not calling into question the "sovereignty of Ukraine."
"Germany will continue to support Ukraine, but at the same time, at some point there must be an end to the loss of life. It is necessary to find a way out of this conflict without establishing peace, which would be to the detriment of Ukraine's interests," Scholz argued.
In mid-November, the Chancellor and the Russian president had their first telephone conversation in almost two years. At the end of December, Scholz said that he would like to talk to Putin again.
