The presidential elections in Ukraine will take place only after the end of the armed conflict with Russia, Vladimir Zelensky said in an interview with British journalist Piers Morgan.

"I have always said that I am open to any election. But there can be no elections during the war. The Constitution should have been changed... the hot stage will end, martial law will be lifted, then, of course, elections will be held," he said.

Zelensky won the presidential election in 2019. Then he scored over 73% of the vote. Regular presidential elections on Ukraine was supposed to pass March 31, 2024, but they were not appointed due to the martial law, which is extended every three months from February 2022. On May 20, Zelensky's term of office expired. In addition to the presidential elections on Ukraine did not hold parliamentary elections either. They were supposed to take place in October last year, they were also canceled due to the current martial law.

According to Zelensky, if elections are held now, it will mean that martial law will cease to operate, and soldiers will leave the battlefield.

Earlier in February, the United States called on Kiev to hold presidential and parliamentary elections by the end of 2025, especially if Ukraine and Russia will agree on a truce.

Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States Oksana Markarova said that Ukraine is ready to discuss with Washington the issue of holding elections by the end of 2025 if it is raised by the new administration of the American president.

"When this issue was theoretically discussed, in 2023-2024, our position was that for this we need to end the fighting. During the war, we will not be able to provide full access to voting," Markarova said.
