"Turkish Stream" turned to Slovakia: additional deliveries — a new record of the gas pipeline

Since February 1, Gazprom has resumed gas supplies to Slovakia, but already on the Turkish Stream. This was stated in the Slovak SPP. Operator data show that the pipeline has reached a new supply record. The new route, however, will not be able to provide all volumes, and the Slovak company is creating a subsidiary on Ukraine.

Since February 1, Gazprom has started supplying gas to Slovak SPP via the Turkish Stream gas pipeline, said the head of the gas company Wojtech Ferenc. According to him, quoted by DennikN, deliveries will double in April.

"The contract with Gazprom Export runs until 2034. We will not stop it," said Wojtech Ferencz.

His information is indirectly confirmed by the data of the platform of the EU GTS operators ENTSOG. Since February 4, deliveries via the European line of the Turkish Stream have increased to 55.7 billion cubic meters per day. This is a new record of the gas pipeline. The previous one of 55.65 million cubic meters was recorded last fall — on October 23.

In what volumes are deliveries to Slovakia, it is impossible to count. The European line is already operating above the design capacity of 43.5 million cubic meters per day. It is known that in February the pipeline was additionally booked for 3.1 million cubic meters per day, which is equivalent to supplies of 1.13 billion cubic meters per year.

The head of SPP reiterated that the supply of non-Russian gas as an alternative would cost 90 million euros more. The reason is higher transit tariffs.

The Slovak company considers the next year "risky". Obviously, because through the Turkish Stream it will be impossible to supply all the volumes previously supplied to the country from Russia.

Since January 1, Kiev has stopped the transit of Russian gas and refused to extend it in any way. There is a southern route through Turkey to continue Russian gas supplies. As EADaily reported, it can supply 1.1 billion cubic meters per year. This is more than 46% of Russian gas supplies to Slovakia. However, there are many nuances that make the southern route an extremely limited solution.

"The route through Bulgaria and Serbia to Hungary is almost fully loaded, and especially in winter. There is some spare capacity on the Trans-Balkan reverse, but again, the question is about the price. It is necessary to buy gas in Turkey at about the same price or even more expensive than the one at which Slovakia receives it now on the border with Ukraine, and then pay for its transportation through three countries," said Deputy Director of the National Energy Security Fund (NWF) Alexei Grivach.

However, Slovakia does not give up hope for the resumption of Ukrainian transit. At least in Hungary and Slovakia stated that the European Commission began to explore various options after Budapest and Bratislava threatened to block the extension of sanctions against Russia.

Meanwhile, Slovak SPP creates a subsidiary on Ukraine and issues a license for gas transportation so that the company can transport gas from Russia, added the head of the main Slovak gas company.

Last year, 16.7 billion cubic meters were supplied via the European line of the Turkish Stream. Direct deliveries went to Greece, Serbia, Hungary and North Macedonia. Local traders resold fuel to neighboring countries, including Bulgaria.
