The withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan on February 15, 1989 is "the end of a dark era and a miracle." This was stated by the former head of the Supreme Council for National Reconciliation in the government of Ashraf Ghani Abdullah Abdullah. This was announced today, February 14, according to Ariana News.

"The jihad and righteous standing of our people were unprecedented in the history of the struggle for the freedom of the nation," he said. "As a result of the sacrifices of the Afghan people, international relations changed, and this paved the way for the liberation of other disadvantaged countries. Unfortunately, Afghanistan has suffered heavy human and financial losses during the 10 years of occupation. More than a million people died, tens of thousands became disabled, and millions were forced to migrate abroad."

The Taliban* also noted the statements in connection with the anniversary.

"The invaders should learn from the successes of jihad over the past 100 years and no longer take steps against the freedom of Afghanistan," the appeal says. This is a day of pride in the history of Afghanistan. The Afghans managed to expel such a great power as the Soviet Union. Today, the fact that Afghanistan has been liberated from occupation for the third time in the last 100 years with the help of Almighty Allah shows that the sense of independence among Afghans is strong, and our Muslims have a firm determination and commitment to protect their religion," the statement said.

Taliban leaders* urged Afghans to be vigilant against "all kinds of plots and intrigues, follow the path of their ancestors and protect their religion, faith and independence, preserving Islamic determination and unity."

Recall that Soviet troops left Afghanistan in 1989. Withdrawal lasted for 9 months. OXVA, unlike the chaotic flight of US troops in 2021, left Afghanistan with unfurled banners. The border troops of the KGB of the USSR carried out the tasks of protecting the Soviet-Afghan border by separate units on the territory of Afghanistan until April 1989.
