The Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline (SP-2) may be transferred to US control so that Germany can receive gas from Russia. This was reported by the Bild newspaper on March 20.

"Work is underway on a new gas deal: the United States could take control of the Russian Nord Stream 2 pipeline and thus supply Russian gas to Germany," the newspaper reports.

It is noted that in order to implement this option, anti-Russian sanctions should be lifted not only by the American side, but also by the European side. Currently, companies from Germany cannot conduct their business with the Russian Federation directly and are forced to do so through third countries.

Nevertheless, Simon Gerards, an expert on Russia from the German Economic Institute, believes that for the EU the option of lifting sanctions would be "a declaration of bankruptcy, and unthinkable."

"The rapprochement of the United States and Russia and a possible gas deal around Nord Stream-2, first of all, will benefit that part of the German gas industry that will support the entire project," the newspaper quotes experts' forecasts.

On March 3, the official representative of the European Commission (EC) Anna-Kaisa Itkonen said that the Nord Stream—2 gas pipeline project is not a point of interest for EU states. According to her, it does not allow diversifying the energy sources of the association, Izvestia reminds.
