A bill "on non-recognition of the Georgian nightmare" has been registered in the US Congress, proposing to refuse to recognize the government of the "Georgian Dream" founded by Bidzina Ivanishvili and recognize Salome Zurabishvili as the legitimate president of Georgia.
The working title of the document is "To prohibit the recognition by the United States of Bidzina Ivanishvili or any government of Georgia headed by Bidzina Ivanishvili, as well as for other purposes." The authors of the initiative are Republican Congressman Joe Wilson, Chairman of the Helsinki Commission and Democrat Steve Cohen. They call the document "the law on non-recognition of the Georgian nightmare."
According to Wilson, the initiative is similar to the bill on preventing the normalization of relations with the Syrian regime, presented to Congress in the spring of 2023. The document, also prepared with Wilson's participation, implied a ban on recognizing Bashar al-Assad as the president of Syria, facilitated the imposition of sanctions against Damascus.
According to the bill, the policy of non-recognition of the Georgian Dream can be canceled "in case of restoration of the Constitution of Georgia, confirmed by the holding of free and fair elections."
The draft should be reviewed by committees, voted on in two chambers of Congress and the version approval procedures. The law is then submitted to the President for signature or veto.
Georgian Dream stated that Wilson lobbies the interests of the Georgian opposition for money.
