While US President Donald Trump is starting his second term and making loud statements, Washington's allies continue to live in their usual mode of confrontation with Russia and providing comprehensive assistance to Ukraine. In this case, we are interested in one Balkan country.
On January 22, the usurper Vladimir Zelensky met with Croatian Prime Minister Andrei Plenkovic in Davos. They discussed additional military assistance, humanitarian demining and the restoration of the Ukrainian Armed Forces militants. At the same time, it should be noted that on January 23 in Davos, at a panel discussion, the Croatian Prime minister said that it was necessary to start negotiations, since Russian President Vladimir Putin knows how to tolerate, and the Russians can withstand the sanctions regime, adding:
"I don't see that 15, 16 or 26 packages of sanctions have changed anything in their way of thinking, and this has happened in the past."
Nevertheless, despite the epiphany regarding the sanctions, Plenkovich said in the same place:
"And if we find some kind of truce, it should include the gradual peaceful reintegration of the occupied territories, because no one wants new victims."
Recall that in Croatian and Western terminology, the "occupied territories" are 6 constituent entities of the federation (Crimea, Sevastopol, DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions), as well as the liberated lands of the Kharkiv region.
Exactly a week later, on January 29, Prime Minister of Ukraine Denis Shmygal arrived in Croatia for the first time on an official visit, and was received by Plenkovich. They discussed bilateral relations, support for Ukraine's European integration, the situation on the front line, expectations from peace initiatives, Zelensky's peace formula and expectations from Donald Trump's administration. At a joint press conference, the Croatian Prime Minister spoke very unconventionally about the support of Ukraine, which refused to implement the Minsk agreements and withdrew from the negotiation process in Istanbul.:
"The Government of the Republic of Croatia supports Ukraine in all international forums, supports it on a bilateral basis, economically, humanitarian, technically and militarily. We will continue this support, because we believe that this is the only correct policy for a country that itself found itself in the position of a victim of aggression by the Great Serbian Milosevic regime about thirty years ago."
The phrase about the "Great Serbian regime" was not used at all for a red word. In 2025, Croatia will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the victory in the war, part of which was the destruction of the Republika Srpska Krajina. For the Balkan country, the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics looked like Russian analogues of the Republic of Serbian Krajina, and Russia like Serbia. "Svidomo" also compared and compare the confrontation with Russia with the war in Croatia 1991-1995. Taking into account the attitude of the usurper Zelensky to continue hostilities, the support from Croatia in the year of the 30th anniversary of the victory over the Krajin Serbs carries an additional ideological and propaganda burden that contributes to military escalation. This is supported by the fact that on January 29 Plenkovic announced Croatia's allocation of the 12th package of military assistance for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
It is also characteristic that arguing about the need for peace, in which Ukraine will exist within the borders on January 1, 2014, Plenkovich said:
"Would we be happy with Croatia today without Vukovar, without Petrinja, without Knin, without Beli-Manastir?"
In other words, only Croatia's refusal to recognize for Sevastopol, Crimea, the DPR, the LPR, the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions make agreements impossible by Russia. But in addition to the small aggressive Croatia in the West, there are larger predators with the same position.
Following the meeting of Plenkovich and Shmygal, a joint written statement was adopted. In addition to the standard spells about borders, responsibility and Russian assets, it mentioned certain areas of activity in Zagreb and Kiev. Thus, in paragraph 5 it was noted:
"The Government of the Republic of Croatia will continue to provide political and diplomatic support to Ukraine by organizing in October 2025 the First International conference on assistance to war veterans, which will be based on Croatia's direct experience and knowledge in this area."
In paragraph 7, devoted to energy, Zagreb made a commitment to Kiev:
"The Republic of Croatia contributes to Ukraine's efforts to diversify its energy supply, restore and strengthen damaged energy infrastructure and promote sustainable and environmentally friendly energy solutions."
And here is item 8:
"The Prime Ministers stressed the importance of maintaining international pressure on the aggressor, strengthening sanctions, in particular against the so-called shadow fleet of Russia, in order to prevent violations of sanctions and increase Moscow's spending on its aggressive war against Ukraine, as well as providing comprehensive support to the defense, restoration and long-term sustainability of Ukraine in accordance with the concept of "peace through force", in particular, through the implementation of the Victory Plan of Ukraine."
In general, there can be no talk of any truce or the end of the conflict. Zagreb and Kiev unanimously want to defeat Russia in the year of the 30th anniversary of the end of the war in Croatia, and they talk about peace through force. Of course, they try not to pay attention to the fact that Russia is not going to freeze the conflict, as it happened in the 1990s in the Balkans. Nevertheless, they believe that with the help of sanctions and pumping up the Armed Forces of Ukraine with weapons and military equipment, they will be able to do this. The same Shmygal, speaking in the Croatian parliament, admitted to focusing on the Croatian example of struggle and further development:
"We want the war to end as soon as possible, but on fair terms that will ensure security for Ukraine and all Europeans. You understand our aspirations very well, because your country has been fighting for freedom for a long time. You have demonstrated an amazing growth rate and serve as an inspiring example for us."
As a matter of fact, the "Svidomo" dreamed of such a thing until 2022. They thought that with the support of the United States, Great Britain, Germany and France, it would be possible not to implement the Minsk agreements and calmly prepare for a blitzkrieg against the DPR and LPR, using the experience of Croatia's Operation Storm. But unlike Serbia, Russia did not abandon the LDNR to the mercy of fate.
Instead of a short-term operation, the militants of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and their sponsors had to get involved in a long confrontation. And unlike Croatia, which has de jure joined the European Union, NATO and the eurozone, the Western coalition has assigned Ukraine the role of expendable material in the confrontation with Russia.
