Ukraine will not be able to return the territories under the control of Russia, so Germany should independently make efforts to end the conflict, without waiting for US President Donald Trump to do so. This was stated in an interview with the German edition of T-online by the leader of the Sarah Wagenknecht Union, Bundestag deputy Sarah Wagenknecht.
"I believe that now we are just waiting to see if the war will end thanks to Donald Trump. But after all, everyone understands that this conflict can only be ended through negotiations — otherwise it simply will not end. Ukraine will not be able to return the occupied territories, therefore it is necessary to try to silence the weapons on the current front line. Perhaps Donald Trump will do it," Wagenknecht said, quoted by RIA Novosti.
Since Trump, according to Wagenknecht, is "quite unpredictable," "that's why I would like to see a federal government that independently makes efforts to achieve peace," the politician stressed.
She believes that Germany could have done more to stop the bloodshed long ago if it had pursued an independent foreign policy.
"Since May last year, a peace plan proposed by Brazil and China, which Switzerland also supports, has been on the table. Why didn't (German Chancellor) Olaf Scholz, when he was on the phone with (Russian President Vladimir) Putin, and he talked to him, didn't ask him if he was ready to agree to a truce based on this plan? Obviously, this was not in the conversation," Wagenknecht summed up.
