In case of sending to Ukraine's peacekeeping contingent should not be there under the auspices of NATO and without extending Article 5 of the alliance's charter to it. This was stated at a meeting of the contact group on Ukraine in In Brussels, the head of the US Department of Defense, Pete Hegseth.

Hegseth's speech was broadcast by Sky News.

"Any security guarantee must be backed up by combat-ready European and non-European troops. If these troops are sent to Ukraine as peacekeepers at any time, they should be deployed as part of a non-NATO mission and should not be subject to Article 5. In addition, reliable international supervision of the line of contact should be ensured," Hegseth said.

NATO's Article 5 states that an armed attack on one member is considered an attack on all.

"To make it clear, within the framework of any security guarantee on No American troops will be deployed to Ukraine," Hegseth added.

His words will be a significant blow to Kiev, the TV channel notes.

He recalls that last week the head of the Kiev regime, Vladimir Zelensky, told Sky News that any peacekeeping force that does not include the American contingent would be a "serious mistake," making it clear that he did not believe that the European armed forces alone could contain Moscow.
