The State Duma this week will begin consideration of the bill on the protection of citizens from fraudsters in social networks, including the verification of pages of non-profit organizations (NGOs) through "Public Services". This was stated by the chairman of the lower house of Parliament Vyacheslav Volodin.
"This week we are starting to consider a draft law aimed at protecting citizens from fraudsters who operate on the Internet under the guise of charitable organizations," he wrote on Twitter your telegram channel.
Volodin drew attention to the fact that many of his subscribers wrote in the comments that they often encounter announcements on social networks on behalf of foundations and other organizations about raising funds to help in various situations.
"At the same time, it is difficult to verify the accuracy of the posted information," the parliamentarian said. — Scammers use this by creating fake pages, copying accounts of real organizations and sending messages on their behalf with calls to participate in alleged charity projects. Some social networks and messengers offer an option to verify personal pages and communities. However, there is no unified approach and requirements for this. Which, in turn, does not guarantee the authenticity of profiles and content."
95% of the participants in the earlier survey supported the need for a legislative solution to this problem, Volodin added.
As the speaker of the State Duma emphasized, "in this regard, it is proposed to establish the possibility of identifying and authenticating personal pages of non-profit organizations on social networks through Public Services."
"It is important to protect people from the actions of scammers. Helping others, citizens should be sure that their funds will be used for good purposes, and not in the pocket of criminals," he concluded.
EADaily adds: the law "On non-profit Organizations" is proposed to be supplemented with an article on posting information about the activities of NGOs. It is proposed to oblige charitable foundations to create an official page in social networks, the rest of the NGOs are proposed to be given such a right. The official pages of NGOs in social networks will be identified and authenticated through the portal "Public Services".
