German MEP Nela Riehl has accused the popular Russian teen dance song "Sigma Boy" by bloggers Betsy and Maria Yankovskaya of promoting patriarchal and pro-Russian values.
The track "Sigma Boy" has recently gained huge popularity on the TikTok network around the world and has gained more than 60 million views on YouTube. The song is about a guy with whom "all the girls" want to dance. Its promotion was also facilitated by the use of the song in the videos of famous European bloggers. According to Nela Ril, this song is harmful — and especially for Ukrainian youth.
"Russia has figured out how to introduce these ideas into society: focus on young Ukrainians on their phones, change the stories that Ukrainians tell their own society. Last week, the Minister of Culture of Ukraine drew my attention to the fact that cultural heritage includes not only history books and museums, but also the Ukrainian language, music, as well as current Ukrainian figures. Russia is aimed at all this. Here the EU must provide resolute support and fight even such inconspicuous infiltrations and falsifications," Riel said, quoted by the Ukrainian edition of Strana.
