Irakli Garibashvili, who announced his resignation from the post of leader of the ruling Georgian Dream and from politics in general, explained that the reason for this decision was "mission accomplished."
"Today, the Georgian Dream has finally formed as a single and strong political force, and, of course, the founder and honorary chairman of our party Bidzina Ivanishvili, who is the guarantor of peace and stability in the country, played a special role in this. At the most critical moment, he was able to consolidate the team, maintain unity, under his leadership, the Georgian Dream prevented huge threats to the country and society, and at the same time brought tangible progress and development in all spheres, in all directions. Against this background, I believe that the honorable mission that was entrusted to me at the time when I returned to politics, first as Defense minister, then for the second time as Prime Minister, and finally as party chairman, the founder of our party and team, we can say that I've already done it. Now I do not see the need to remain the chairman of the party and in general in politics. Therefore, I have decided to leave the post of chairman of the Georgian Dream and leave politics, but continue to serve my country from a different position," Garibashvili said at a briefing on April 25.
Garibashvili denied rumors of a conflict with Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze.
"When I became Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze was the chairman of the ruling party, we had absolutely harmonious relations. No one can name a single case where there could be disagreements between us. You can ask Kobakhidze himself and any member of our team about this. We worked together in a common cause. Look for problems in your destroyed opposition," he told reporters.
Garibashvili is leaving for the private sector. He did not rule out a return to politics in the future, but he is not going to join the opposition, and also stressed that he remains in Georgia is not going to go abroad.
"I remain a loyal soldier of the Georgian Dream and our country, I wish good luck to the whole team," Garibashvili said.
Irakli Garibashvili was elected chairman of the Georgian Dream — Democratic Georgia party on February 1, 2024.
Irakli Garibashvili served as Prime Minister of Georgia twice: from November 20, 2013 to December 30, 2015 and the second time - from February 22, 2021 to January 29, 2024.
