The immediate cause of death of American director David Lynch was cardiac arrest, the TMZ tabloid reports, citing a death certificate.

The document states that Lynch had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and dehydration. According to the tabloid, in 2024, the director said that after years of smoking, he was diagnosed with pulmonary emphysema, because of which he could not leave the house. As Lynch noted at the time, he had a bad habit at the age of eight.

COPD is an inflammatory disease with lesions of the small bronchi (airways), which leads to respiratory failure due to narrowing of the bronchial lumen.

Among the symptoms, in particular, there is a feeling of lack of air and a chronic cough. COPD and emphysema belong to a group of similar diseases.

The director died on January 15, 2025, he did not live four days before his 79th birthday. Lynch released his first film "Eraser Head" in 1977. Among his most famous works are the TV series "Twin Peaks", the films "Mulholland Drive", "Elephant Man" and "Highway to Nowhere", as well as "Blue Velvet" and others.

In addition, Lynch is the winner of the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2001 and the honorary Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 2006. He was nominated three times for an Oscar for best director, and in 2019 Lynch was awarded an honorary Oscar statuette for his contribution to cinema, RBC reminds.
