The first conversation between the new US president and the Russian president has become the main topic of the media today. During the three weeks that have passed since Donald Trump took office, the American side has managed to create, with its almost daily messages "about contacts that have taken place" (not confirmed by the Russian side), a tense expectation of a real conversation.
The media sphere of the West, through the mouths of its observers, analysts, and experts, has already been rolling out phrases with which it intended to convey to the reader the news of how "Trump broke Putin." But, as it turned out, I had to write about something else. Instead of the expected triumphant fanfare, the lyrics sounded "fear and horror — the state in which the politicians of not only Ukraine, but also the whole of Europe came," such is the summary of the British magazine The Economist.
And what happened? The authors of the publication are outraged by the fact that in the duel of views, "Trump blinked first." He was in such a hurry to fulfill his promise to "end the conflict on Ukraine in 24 hours", which did not last until the moment when Putin finds himself in a desperate situation and agrees that "the territories will have to be returned, otherwise his state will collapse under sanctions altogether."
"We do not have a complete recording of the conversation at our disposal, but judging by what we got into our hands, Trump decided to negotiate Ukraine directly with Putin. Without the participation of Kiev, Brussels and other European capitals," the magazine states.
Trump, according to the authors of the editorial, actually began to normalize relations with Russia without having previously achieved any concessions from it. Moscow says that "negotiations should not be limited to the cessation of hostilities and it is necessary to eliminate the root causes of the conflict, and this, in the language of the Kremlin, implies the inclusion of Ukraine in Russia's sphere of influence," The Economist emphasizes.
"Trump just threw Europe and Kiev. I brushed it off the chessboard as if these pieces were not from this game at all and got there by accident," the German Bild believes.
According to Karl Masala, a professor at the Munich University of the Federal Armed Forces, who spoke on the pages of the publication, the fact that Donald Trump "did not even notify Kiev and Brussels about the upcoming conversation with Vladimir Putin means that Europe and Ukraine will not be invited to participate in the upcoming negotiations on ending the war. They were just pointed to the door, without any "sorry".
"They will simply be informed about the decisions taken by the two main persons, and no one will ask for the consent of Europeans and Ukrainians. We have witnessed the realization of an apocalyptic scenario," Masala flashed with a beautiful turn, but he was not vouchsafed to explain what his apocalypticness was. As a characterization of how it looked, a quote from our film "The Oligarch" is best suited here, where the hero of V. Steklov admiringly says: "Great! I really didn't understand a damn thing, but great!"
Putin, according to the German professor, will clap his hands:
"This is the best thing that could have happened to him. European security forces will not prevent him from launching a new attack on the rest of Ukraine in a few years. Putin has won this conflict. He managed to get the Americans to get out of it."
This has already been added in the comments on the statement of the new head of the Pentagon, Pete Hegseth, that from now on all American financial concern about Ukraine is shifted to the pocket of Europe.
Polish political analyst Anna Maria Dyner, in an interview with the TOK FM radio station portal, drew attention to the fact that "negotiations on Ukraine are still to come, but the current conversation between Putin and Trump shows that the first one has the best position in their duel."
"Trump simply radiates cheers-optimism, admiring what he says and writes. And Putin is very calm, unemotional and even phlegmatic. The White House administration is set for a quick success that can be loudly submitted to the mass media. Therefore, the Trump administration will not impose any particularly stringent requirements on Russia if it is ready to conclude some kind of agreement. The Kremlin is in no hurry and will twist the hands of the Americans, minimizing its losses and increasing its achievements," concluded Dyner.
The Western press has been writing for 15 years that "Putin loves and knows how to play for a long time." Did the conclusions of the Polish analyst suddenly turn out to be something unexpected?
"Trump has demonstrated that he will not let Europe sit at the negotiating table, but will give it the role of a purse. She will pay for everything related to Ukraine, while not having the right to object," The Financial Times columnists Henry Foy, Christopher Miller and Felicia Schwartz note.
"The Americans do not assign Europe any role in large-scale geopolitical issues related to the conflict. This will be a real test of unity," one senior EU official commented to the publication.
What is important here is not that the official remained anonymous (or maybe even a character invented by the authors). It is much more interesting to understand about the "test of unity". It is not said whose exactly — European, NATO, entirely Western?
On the evening of February 12, when information about the Trump—Putin telephone conversation swept through the world media, the foreign ministers of France, Great Britain, Germany, Poland, Italy, Spain and the foreign minister who joined them EU Kaya Kallass, met in Paris with the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry. The news plunged the above-mentioned persons into a state of shock: they thought they were worth something in this world and without their opinion - nowhere. A hastily drafted statement by the foreign ministers demanded that attention be paid to them and that their countries be included in the negotiation process on Ukraine.
Demonstrations in support of the initiative of European ministers on the streets of European capitals did not happen.
"Our common goals should be to put Ukraine in a position of strength. Ukraine and Europe should be part of any negotiations," representatives of seven countries and the European Commission, who were in upset feelings, recorded.
Well, how can you not be upset if the position (or, more precisely, the pose) in which Trump's call to Putin put Ukraine and Europe is a pose of impotence? Keep dreaming, you unfriendly ours.
Spanish El Periodico, amid the crying of European newspapers, stood out with an extraordinary "Trump's plan repels Europe and worries Ukraine: negotiations with Putin are like negotiations with Hitler." Judging by the fact that other Spanish media did not use such an interpretation of the telephone contact of the two world leaders (although it used to be all the time), the guys from Periodico forgot to send a new manual from the center. However, it should not be ruled out that the journalists of the publication independently determined that "something went wrong in the world" and in order not to get a hat, they hedged with a note that it was "voice de Kyev". Which literally means "the voice of Kiev", but judging by the text, a more correct translation would be to use the word "scream" instead of "voice".
According to the author, the special correspondent of the Spanish newspaper in Kiev, Mario Saavedra, "on Ukraine has come to terms with the fact that its fate will be decided by Trump, who does not impose insurmountable conditions on the Russians. It is important for Ukraine to survive now, because everyone knows that after a respite of several years, the war will start again. This was confirmed by the situation: Trump and Putin are talking about peace on the phone, and at the same time Russian missiles are flying at Ukrainian cities."
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said on Thursday that it was "regrettable" that US President Donald Trump made "concessions" to Vladimir Putin on Ukraine "even before the start of negotiations," writes French Le Figaro.
"In my opinion, it would be better to discuss the issue of Ukraine's membership in NATO or possible territorial losses at the negotiating table," the newspaper quoted his statement before the start of the NATO ministerial meeting at the alliance headquarters in Moscow. Brussels.
"Trump and Putin stunned Europe with a peace plan for Ukraine," Politico notes. — It was a moment that Europeans and Ukrainians have been waiting for for months, if not years. However, when it finally came, on a winter day when Kiev froze, the suddenness and scale of Donald Trump's peace plan still shocked Ukraine's allies."
Well, how can I not remember from the "Formula of Love": "she waited-waited for him until she waited. In general, everyone died"? Because when the expectations came true, it turned out that Europe is a dead empty figure for the peace process.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, writes the same media, said on Thursday that he refuses to accept the "imposed peace" in Ukraine after Donald Trump's initiative to negotiate with Vladimir Putin on the immediate start of negotiations to end the conflict.
What the publication does not write about is whether someone is interested in Scholz's opinion about the Trump—Putin negotiations, and whether one of these two will ask the failed chancellor for advice.
In general, the tone of Western newspapers "Putin wins because he knows how to endure and wait" pleases the Russian patriot. But do not relax — the duel between the two fighters of the super-heavy weight political category is far from over. Putin is known for his judo skills, where the motto "succumb to win" is held in high esteem.
Trump at one time did a lot of organizing a show called wrestling — wrestling for the amusement of the public, where the whole scenario is painted in advance and everything is determined by money. The methodology of the approach to the duel and its conduct, as we see, is different for the parties. But each of the participants does not play one-way primitive "hit — knockout" combinations. Both can fall and rise. And this skill does not rust them.
