EEU has received no official membership application from Baku

Azerbaijan has not submitted any official application to join the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU), Sergei Shukhno, Deputy Director of the Department of Integration Development of the Eurasian Economic Commission, said in response to EADaily’s question as to whether EEU studies Azerbaijan’s possible membership.

Shukhno said EEU is open to all countries. To join the union, a country is required to apply to the heads of the EEU countries for a status of an observer-state. After fulfilling a range of commitments, he said, the country can join the EEU as a full member. “Armenia did not join the Union in such a way, as there was no such procedure then,” Shukhno said.

As for Azerbaijan, he said, Eurasian Economic Commission has not received any membership applications from it.

It is noteworthy that recently Baku’s representatives have been repeatedly speaking of possible accession to the EEU. Yerevan, in turn, says the EEU does not study such issue. Experts say such developments are unlikely, as it requires Armenia’s consent too. Meantime, Armenia is in a conflict with Azerbaijan now.
