Incumbent President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov is nominated for another term. The presidential election is set for February 12 2017, the State News Agency of Turkmenistan reported on December 15.
Turkmenistan’s Democratic Party Council adopted a relevant decision and submitted it to the Central Commission for Elections and Referendums in Turkmenistan. The Democratic Party Council met at the Center of Public Organizations in Ashgabat. The nomination procedure was organized in conformity with Article 44 of the Election Code.
The Central Commission for Elections and Referendum announced the start of the presidential race on October 24 2016. Under the national legislation, 60 days prior to the presidential election to be held on February 12 2017, the nomination of candidates was launched. This process is still underway. The candidates from the Party of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs and the Agrarian Party will be named on December 15 and December 17, respectively.
Under the Election Code, public interest groups continue signature campaign, as at least 10,000 signatures are required for registration of the candidates for president. The registration will start on December 24. Afterwards, the candidates for president will be making speech for the media and meeting with voters.
