The leader of Catalonian separatists who left Finland on March 24 has been detained in Germany, his lawyer announced.
The warrant for his arrest was signed on March 23, next day after he arrived in Helsinki, BBC reports. Puigdemont was detained on a highway by road police after crossing the border with Denmark. Now he is in a police station.
To remind, Carles Puigdemont fled to Belgium after the Catalonian parliament adopted a resolution on independence after a referendum, while the Spanish government put limits on local governance, removed Puigdemont and his government from power, dismissed the local parliament and appointed new elections. In Spain, he is accused of mutiny and embezzlement. He is facing up to 50-year sentence. The country’s Supreme Council issued a warrant for his arrest.
