Mikhail Kavelashvili, a representative of the Georgian Dream Party, has been elected President of Georgia. This was stated by the CEC of Georgia.

The candidate from the ruling Georgian Dream party, Mikhail Kavelashvili, won 224 votes out of 300 and was elected president of Georgia, CEC head Giorgi Kalandarishvili said.

"Mikhail Kavelashvili has been elected President of Georgia," Kalandarishvili said, quoted by <url>.

Kavelashvili needed to get 200 votes to be elected president.

It is noted that this is the first election in the history of Georgia when the president was elected not by direct vote, but by the electoral college.

The Electoral College consists of 300 members: 150 deputies of the Georgian Parliament, 21 deputies of the Supreme Council of Adjara, 20 representatives of the Supreme Council of Abkhazia and 109 deputies of district sakrebulo — municipal authorities of various regions of Georgia.

Recall, Mikhail Kavelashvili was the only contender for the post of head of state.

As EADaily reported this morning, protesters gathered in Tbilisi at the Georgian parliament building before the election of the country's new president. Demonstrators in the number of several hundred people came to the square, they brought with them pipes and flags of Georgia.

At that time, the current President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, demonstratively walked through the square. She proceeded on foot in front of the Parliament building, accompanied by guards. At the same time, the head of state did not make lengthy statements and only on the move told journalists that she was "going to work." Then she went to the Presidential palace of Orbeliani.
