US President Donald Trump will today sign a decree imposing sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC) for the persecution of the United States and its allies, such as Israel. This was stated by a representative of the White House, according to the Russian Air Force service.
The document will introduce financial and visa sanctions for ICC staff and their family members, the source said.
"This move by Trump followed the way last week the Democrats in The US Senate blocked an attempt by Republicans to impose sanctions against the ICC in protest against arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant. This week Netanyahu is on a visit to Washington," the BBC reports.
It is noted that the ICC has taken measures in advance to protect its employees from possible US sanctions. They were given salaries for three months in advance, sources told Reuters earlier.
The ICC is facing US retaliatory measures for the second time, the BBC emphasizes. During the first Trump administration in 2020, Washington imposed sanctions against ICC chief prosecutor Fatou Bensouda and Director of the Department of Jurisdiction Fakiso Benchochoho in connection with the investigation of alleged war crimes in Afghanistan.
