The results of the elections to the state parliaments of Saxony and Thuringia in eastern Germany demonstrated the fear of German citizens to be drawn into a "big war" in Europe, said Bundestag deputy and leader of her own party Sarah Wagenknecht in an interview with the Welt newspaper.

The chairman of the "Sarah Wagenknecht Union — for Reason and Justice" stated:

"Much attention during the completed election campaign, of course, was paid to the issues of war and peace. As the outcome of the vote showed, residents of Saxony and Thuringia expect that the land governments will reflect their position, their majority opinion on this issue."

As Wagenknecht stressed, the governments of the federal states are not capable of making foreign policy decisions, but they can determine the vector of the course being pursued in Berlin, as well as send a certain signal. The parliamentarian also recalled that on the eve of the elections, on the initiative of her party, a sociological study was conducted, which demonstrated the fear of half of the citizens of Germany and the majority of residents of the east of Germany "to be drawn into a big war."

"Two-thirds in the east reject plans to deploy American missiles in Germany. In my opinion, the election results make it clear that the land governments should send a clear message. They should use their specific weight and influence to change the foreign policy course of the federal government," she continued.

The parliamentarian also repeated the condition announced on the eve of the elections, according to which the Sarah Wagenknecht Union will participate in coalition negotiations in Saxony and Thuringia only with those parties that reject Berlin's plans to deploy American long-range missiles in Germany.

According to the results of the completed elections, the pro-Russian Alternative for Germany party won a landslide victory in Thuringia, with the support of 32.8% of voters. The Sarah Wagenknecht Union received 15.8%. Thus, the political forces advocating the active diplomatic participation of Germany in the diplomatic process in Ukraine have gained almost half of the votes in total. In Saxony, AdG and Sarah Wagenknecht Union received the support of 42.4% of the region's residents (30.6% and 11.8%, respectively).
