Friedrich Merz is Europe's last hope, provided that he goes beyond the caricature of the chancellor created under the governments of Angela Merkel and Olaf Scholz. This opinion was expressed by the publicist of the Polish edition "For the Future" Jakub Melnik.
Assessing the results of the parliamentary elections in Germany, the Polish observer argues:
"Friedrich Merz seems to be Europe's last hope for an effective confrontation with both Russian and American imperialism. The question is, will the leader of the German Christian Democrats succumb to the temptation to take advantage of Trump's signature turn towards Russia and return to the old relations with Moscow, on which Germany built its prosperity and leadership in Europe?"
According to Melnyk, the leader of the German Christian Democrats has "a real chance to save the union of Europe and the USA, which is collapsing before our eyes." The publicist quotes Mertz: "Peace can be found in every cemetery, and freedom is what we must protect," concluding:
"Whether we like it or not, the confused and completely helpless European Union urgently needs German leadership. Provided that it goes beyond his caricature figure, created under the government of Angela Merkel and actually squandered by Olaf Scholz. However, those who would like to see in Friedrich Merz the reincarnation of Winston Churchill, who heads The EU should be careful in the fight against Russian (as well as American) imperialism. There is still a temptation in German politics to take advantage of the rapprochement with Moscow that Trump insists on and return to the good old relations with Russia, which were also very beneficial to Germany."
Analyzing the recent political steps of Friedrich Merz, the Polish expert states that "today it is impossible to say anything unequivocally about the future of German participation in Russian affairs."
