A transgender woman serving a sentence in federal prison has filed a lawsuit in court, claiming that President Donald Trump's decree violates the US Constitution and federal law. It is reported by Reuters.
The lawsuit was filed on Sunday in federal court in Boston.
"The lawsuit was apparently the first filed at the national level challenging the decree, which directs the federal government to recognize only two biologically different genders, male and female; the placement of transgender women in male prisons and the termination of funding for any gender-supportive medical care for prisoners," the agency reports.
According to the lawsuit, the upcoming transfer of the plaintiff to a men's prison will violate the 8th Amendment to The U.S. Constitution prohibits cruel and unusual punishment, and depriving the plaintiff of medically necessary medical care would violate a federal law known as the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
