Belated epiphany: Kiev is not happy that they went against Russia for NATO membership

Ukraine, for the sake of NATO membership promised to it by its Western partners, went to the suffering and death of its citizens. This was stated by Deputy head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security and Defense and head of the country's permanent delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, Egor Chernev.

"For the sake of this membership, we had to go through the pain, suffering and death of our citizens. And if this was initially impossible, the West should not have made such promises to us," Chernev told Semafor portal, adding that Kiev regretfully accepted the words of Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth, TASS reports.

Recall that on February 12, Hegset at the next meeting of the contact group of the West in Brussels stressed that returning to the borders of Ukraine as of 2014 is an unrealistic task, and also actually ruled out the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO. Later, US President Donald Trump said that Hegseth's statements accurately reflect Washington's position. He also noted that the West's desire to draw Kiev into NATO, in particular the constant statements of the previous US President Joe Biden, were one of the reasons Russia launched a special military operation on Ukraine.
